Faking Bad English..

Why does she even try and why on earth people believe her is beyond me.

My grandmother is Japanese. She immigrated to the US at the age of 20, over 60 years ago and she hasn't forgotten Japanese despite only speaking it with her sister a couple of times a year !!

One of my Japanese relatives has been in Canada since forever. She apparently has trouble reading, but speaking should still be fine.

It's kind of weird, sometimes she uses vocabulary I wouldn't think her capable of, and then she misspells the easiest words and makes the stupidest grammar mistakes. Like she can't use the passive, writes "ressun" as "resson" (it's from "lesson", so I understand why she made that mistake) and "suiteru" as "tsuiteru" (an entirely different word). She also just has a very very obvious Canadian accent when she speaks, which makes her Japanese sound even less fluent. She probably gets through her day without any huge communication problems (when someone's not fluent the other person just uses more energy to make sense of it), but you couldn't have her at a job where her foreignness doesn't count for anything.

She should really brush up on the basics, huge gaps there.

i would put her speaking at a lower intermediate level

a beginner can obviously not really talk in the language and can only say some basic easy phrases/introductions and even though they can say ''I like soccor'' they can not explain why or what made them like soccor

miranda can describe events/dreams/hopes/her life(assuming all of her videos are not her looking up words before shooting a vid) which i think is technically considered mid intermediate level BUT since she still makes so many basic level mistakes it makes her lower intermediate

I am a b2 speaker myself which is mid intermediate speaking/understanding I honestly am not much better than miranda I think mira is a b1 speaker

I can understand maaaaybe forgetting a few words in English after a long time in Japan, but forgetting to add an "s" on plurals?

Doesn't make her look Japanese, just dumb

I have friends who have forgotten mother tongues because they moved countries, and when I moved to Asia for a while, my English became very stilted because I had adjusted to speaking in a way that made my usually very thick accent more easily understood, but it didn't exactly take me long to readjust. And that was different, I had changed my spoken English rather than "forgotten it" because I had decided to speak another language while I was there. She just annoys me so much

This. As a native English speaker who learned Japanese, I can tell what Mira is getting at most of the time with her weird Japanese because I can see how she tried to put sentences together with an English mindset. It's an issue for a lot of foreigners who learn Japanese, it's hard to break the language patterns that you are used to.

I think she probably did study Japanese really hard for a year or two, but without continued learning and refining. She can definitely get around by herself and get points across but not eloquently or fluently. Granted though, her English isn't exactly eloquent either.

Jesus, Rody's videos are so boring. Like, seriously, who the hell cares about Japanese supermarkets? I'm sure they're like supermarkets in any other country except with mostly Japanese products. But I guess that proves weebs will watch anything as long as it has the word "Japanese" in the title.

That's an interesting point about her language skills. I remember her saying somewhere that she stopped studying Japanese (if I find the video I'll specify which) and I guess that really shows. It's funny how for someone who claims she's fluent in Japanese, won't teach her hypothetical kids English, and treats Japan like the holy grail of countries, she doesn't even make the effort to properly study the language. I get that she lives in Japan and that definitely helps her learning somewhat, but like other people have said, that isn't everything. If you want to get properly invested in the language, you have to study it. Plus lots of Japanese teaching programs contain tons of cool and interesting information about the language and history of Japanese culture. It's a shame to miss out on that stuff.
