This is one of the best structured and laid out thread intros I have ever read.

Thank you, sincerely! :alpacashocked: I did spend quite a few hours on it and I'm still fixing some errors.

honestly props for this! i've been following grimes for a while, i'm a huge fan of her music and it kind of makes me sad to see all her bullshit laid out like this lol. she's so unreliable, like 80% of all the cool stuff she talks about never comes out, but some of the miss anthropocene tracks leaked and i really like them! the one thing she has in common with azealia banks is that they're both talented artists who need to shut the fuck up.

Tbh, I dislike her personality a lot because she can be trashy and a hypocrite and just obnoxious, but I admit that I love her music... "Genesis", "Oblivion", "We Appreciate Power" and "Violence" are my favorites.

lmao i was confused / wondering why the bottom portion of the intro was striked out until i saw your note at the bottom.

Mannnnnn i used to be a HUGE Grimes fan and Visions got so much replay from me, but the whole Elon Musk/ Azealia and Poppy fiasco was what started to kill my love for her. I've always known of her pretentiousness/try-hardness (re: her 2009 houseboat nonsense lmao) and really didn't mind it that much but i feel like after her association with Musk, she's gone wayyyyy too tryhard for me. After her tweet about hentai, I stopped following her altogether because i'm tired of eyerolling.

Hadn't known of what was going on with her new album until this post. Didn't even know it's supposedly called Miss_Anthropocene. Also, LOL @ that gibberish about her new album being pro-climate change

She is a freakin' talented artist. Visions is an absolute masterpiece, I still listen to it and am sometimes in awe at the magical feeling the album can put me in. I saw her live after she released Art Angels and she was honestly really fun and sweet on stage, if a lil bit awkward.

TBH I think a lot of what she says on the Internet isn't her trying to be a tryhard, I feel like she is genuinely... off? as a person? She's always been into weird, fringe things since she started producing and writing music, but now that it's "cool" to be into this shit, her weird genuineness on Twitter makes her seem extra cringey.

I do agree though that since she started to associate herself with Elon Musk she started to go downhill.

I've been as well! I got into her in 2013 and I'd still say I'm a fan of at least her music. Even then, I haven't liked a lot of what she's released recently, but I'm willing to give her a chance this time around since her life's been a hot mess. I do get the feeling that she's not really the same "Grimes" she was back then. Ever since Art Angels it's like she's been a new person with an entirely new set of interests. I also used to be a fan of Azealia back in 2014, coincidentally, before her shit truly began to hit the fan. xD

Genesis and Oblivion, what fantastic tracks. Visions is a wonderful album, and while I adore Art Angels I prefer her Halfaxa and Visions era music far more.

I'm jealous that you got to see her live! I'd kill for that, especially to have seen her live in her earlier 2011/2012 tours. I agree with you in that she's always been far more in touch with what she perceives as cool, and has never really cared about mainstream preferences, so she's always struck people as weird. At times though, I do wonder if her acting weird (especially online) is a bit more "performative" so to speak, since she's alienated a lot of her previous fans since the day she became public with Musk. From what I've read in her latest interviews, she's described not really caring about what anybody thinks of her anymore and feels that her image is already "ruined" anyway, so she can just do anything. I feel bad for her in a sense, despite all of her questionable behavior.

I was considering whether her 2009 houseboat adventure was worthy of being in this post. xD I decided against it since it didn't have much to do with her "Grimes" persona, it was just her and her friend being weird as usual. That being said, there's a lot of "interesting" pictures of her pre-Grimes that always give me a chuckle.

In all honesty, even if she likes hentai, I have no idea why she felt like that was a necessary thing to tweet. I do get the feeling she's trying harder to even further alienate her fans lately, lol.

I apologize, maybe I should have put that picture under a spoiler. xD The source website for the picture doesn't say anything about it, but I feel like I recall the picture being posted on Tumblr with the claim that it was a pig's brain used for students to study. I don't believe it's a human brain (if it is, something's wrong with it, lol.)

I guess I'll go against the grain and say that I am not a fan of hers and really dislike her music. I tried to listen to a few well recommended songs when she was in the media a while back when she started dating Elon and I found it all extremely amateurish and felt like she recorded it in her house and used garage band and an ipad. Not to say that you can't make legitimate music that way but her music didn't sound polished or particularly "wow" to me for the amount of praise heaped upon her. Like oblivion's beats are very 1 dimensional and I'm not a fan of that breathy high pitched vocal style and songs with very little structure. Then add on top of it her bizarre persona and the Elon Musk stuff and ehhh sorry it's just too much for me. Grimes is going to be someone I don't think I'll ever come around on.

Edit went back and read the entire synopsis (great job OP) and ha I totally called the garage band thing. I'm sorry, you can literally hear the low production values. You can tell she likely has little musical background.

For me, Grimes lives on as the person she was from 2011-2015. She's best consumed when in the "edgy Tumblr teen" mindset, along with Purity Ring and Crystal Castles.

Totally fair to not like her music, but I think the raw and unpolished quality of her music is what attracted people to her in the first place.

If you listen to her earlier albums like Halfaxa and Geidi Princess, it's truly just noise and repetitive beats/sounds, her experimenting with music production. When she came out with Visions, it hit the sweet spot between melodies and sounds. Coupled with the fact that she doesn't really sing as much as she does just croon in a garbled sort of way, it created this sensual album that created "moods" rather than "songs".

Art Angels is the first album that is actually a true "music" album, in terms of songwriting, production, and structure. It definitely alienated a lot of her previous fans that appreciated her out-of-box ear for music (me included). I mean, when she recorded and released Go (her song that she wrote for Rihanna that she rejected), people were upset with her because it was such a "pop" song, I guess.

Again, I think at the end of the day, her music is not for everyone (my friend dislikes her high-pitched singing voice too) but I think it's unfair to say that her low production value is what makes her music unpalatable for some people.

Man crystal castles, there's a name I haven't thought of in a long time. That was another one of those bands everyone around me was trying to get me into a decade ago and I just couldn't. Moods vs songs is an apt description for it and that entire musical movement is just not for me despite being very popular. I can see how the raw-ness to her music might be what attracts people to her. But I have to disagree on the production value not being a turnoff. Some people like me just can't get past it and it is what it is. But I almost never see people with my opinion on Grimes so I'm fine being in the minority on it.

You were completely right. xD She didn't have any musical experience prior to about 2007/2008, when she was encouraged to start making music by her peers. She started making her first album in 2009, so she only had around one or two years of any musical experience when she got a record deal. Personally, I like the "amateur" sort of basement-y quality of her earlier work, and her ability to produce music has got far more polished and professional since her beginning.

Oh man, Grimes/Purity Ring/Crystal Castles etc. is such a throwback to my early 2010s middle school years. In fact in 2013 when I was 12 I ran an aesthetic blog on Tumblr with pictures of flowers, pools, etc. and the songs Fineshrine by Purity Ring and Violent Dreams by Crystal Castles were on my blog's autoplay song list. :P
