people have said this before on here but despite her stellar academic record it seems like she really lacks any sort of critical thinking or self-awareness. i guess it shows that getting accepted to an Ivy doesn't always equate actual intelligence.

she always absolves herself of any responsibility and deflects it onto society at large, and says things that "expose" her past self for no good reason whatsoever other than to show people "Look at me society made me think this way but I've learned so much and come so far," like blaming her ignorance of racial issues on public schools or her misogyny on romcoms or some bs like "girls just weren't considered cool in high school" (from her how to be single video)

sidenote the message of that book she recommended called The Coddling of the American Mind seems to have been completed lost on her if she can't even stand any sort of attempt to question her responsibility or transparency in her comment section, no matter how insignificant

I agree. at first, I thought I would get too annoyed watching someone defend Ashley for 15 minutes, but I decided to give it a chance to change my mind -- and to be honest, it made me madder. I wrote a whole response but it was just rehashing the points that we make in this thread. she justifies Ashley's actions by saying "oh it's Ashley's choice to sell PR" "oh it's on US, the viewers, for misinterpreting Ashley's comments about how hard she works and her family's background" "we're all in a capitalist society anyway so she might as well profit off of it" (wait what--?) "yeah, she sees fashion week as out of touch and elitist, but at the same time, who's going to say no to going to fashion week?"

I'm sorry, but these are all such dumb arguments made in defense of Ashley. if I built my brand and my channel on thrifting and championing sustainable ideals (though she didn't say she was going to be 100% sustainable, as her fans point out), speaking out about larger issues (e.g. capitalism), AND proceeded to critique NYFW by calling it elitist and out-of-touch (despite dedicating 3 videos to it and rubbing shoulders with Karlie Kloss KUSHNER and Derek Blasberg), honestly, I wouldn't go. I really wouldn't unless there was a reason to or if it could contribute to my content somehow, e.g. a show spearheaded by a POC designer or a completely sustainable brand. And the thing is, this user said she WOULD go to NYFW if she was invited -- SO??? She's not a thrifting fashion YouTuber who criticizes capitalism despite the fact that her entire brand is built on perpetuating the system. go to NYFW if you were invited, that's not a relevant argument here???

the user also brushed off the housewives comments by being like "yeah what she said is a little disrespectful but she does NOT have an inflated sense of herself as an influencer" and goes on to defend Ashley by saying that she does have a lot of influence and is that important and inspirational to other people with her videos and editing. wait, so if Ashley is THAT important and THAT influential, all of her other actions and statements are okay? there's this disconnect like "Ashley's super important -- but give her a break!" are we not supposed to hold influencers accountable then? Do we just give them a free pass because....? in the end, she just concludes that Ashley is good at editing and making her videos and puts in all that time and effort. oh okay, I suppose that's it. THAT'S why we can give Ashley a free pass. Never mind the fact that she blames all of her problems on other people/things (e.g. her public education schooling, society at large, etc), makes tone-deaf comments about race, virtue signals (sorry, i mean VALUE SIGNALS), makes hypocritical statements, puts down other people, etc, etc, it's all okay because she's good at editing. Okay, well, I think we're good here, we found the answer. Time to close the thread 🙄

You'll be surprised how many people like Ashley exist in the academic field, i don't want to take from her effort here (i know the US has really crazy methods and specifics for applications and college acceptance) but i really REALLY think the fact that her parents are very successful academics helped her a lot to get accepted, even in my country i knew some people in university, who were children of academic professors in the same institution, that was just plain stupid and the most analytic thing they could process were things like "patriarchy bad, racism bad". privilege is really a thing that helps people like Ashley get into college even if they aren't that great or talented (her film stuff is really underwhelming) just look at people like Olivia jade, or the legacy kids and rich kids that can afford donations for the universities they want, hell even having both parents that have a college education is a form of privilege.

I know people who comment and (dis)like may be a "vocal" minority of people who watched that video and don't necessarily reflect the population, but around 60% of the viewers of the video are apparently aged 18-24, which is kind of... disappointing? because I thought the majority of her stans would be like 14 or something so their lack of critical thought and ability to be discerning would be "excusable" but it looks like a lot of her viewers/stans are around her age or college-aged at least. there are more viewers aged 25-35 than 13-17. idk maybe teens lie about their age or something, or i've significantly underestimated the reasoning capacity of college aged kids.

Yes, this. i think this is also the case with the girl defending Ashley who's currently attending MIT. (some light sleuthing below)

i looked more into her channel (considering she gave a shout-out to her main channel at the beginning of the video) and she has a college acceptance reaction video with 2.1 M views, where she reacts to college decisions to ~20 really good/elite universities -- being able to apply to these many schools is already a sign of at least some wealth. those application fees add up, ranging from $25-$90 per school through commonapp (from my experience, the fees are on the higher end with these schools), but that's already $500-$1800 worth of application fees just to apply to that many schools and is a barrier to many students who are from lower-income families

since her full name is her youtube channel, i just googled her name (with "MIT") and on the FRONT PAGE - there's an article about this video (https://village14.com/2019/05/01/newton-north-senior-becomes-famous-for-opening-email/#axzz6OSHFNMGf), which ignited a whole debate in the comment section. I looked into her high school and it's in a wealthy suburb in Mass where the median income is $107,696 and median income for a family was $136,843

so it is possible that she got fee waivers to afford those application fees, but seeing where her high school is based, it feels less likely that this is the case.

I'm not too surprised tbh. with the two defending videos (this one and the other one that someone linked previously - she has a bunch of videos dedicated to her experience at a liberal arts college), there are college-aged fans who make all the "right" moves and go to good universities, but lack any semblance of critical thinking. i wouldn't be surprised if a lot of them were just as privileged as ashley

She contradicted herself in that video too, saying that Ashley's job is to participate in capitalism (which is true) when at the beginning of the video acknowledged that selling PR is sketch (even though she decided it's Ashley's right, which... sure technically). There's a difference between shilling affiliate links as a fashion influencer and selling PR for full retail price behind your audience's back (if it wasn't a big deal, she would have listed it on her bestdressed store). It's significantly scummier in my opinion, and capitalistic to a tee. You don't have to turn a profit on everything, Ash.

Ashley's biggest issue is that she claims to care, that's it tbh, she claims to care abt capitalism, abt racism, feminism, this and that then under the same breath she goes and does THE EXACT THINGS she's against of. All the things she's done are wrong there's no denying that, but it makes it even worse that she acts like she knows abt what she's talking about with a holier than thou attitude and refuses to take ANY criticisms seriously.
