Things Cosplayers Do That Annoy You

As a cosplayer myself, I have various things that bother me:

1. Cosplay supremacists who think you HAVE TO make you entire cosplay from scratch, head to toe, to be a "REAL" cosplayer (insert eye roll here). Not everyone has the time to find all those fabrics and materials, let alone put all of it together.

2. Cosplayers who rant online about strangers that touch their props or costumes without permission, but in persion, they do the same thing to you and touch your cosplay or props without permission. Hypocrites

3. The terrible combination of lewds + minor (as in, not a legal adult) + patreon exclusive. It gets close to the point where it's softcore child porn and these cosplayers are probably attracting pedos and creeps. This is honestly so uncomfortable to see on Instagram too.

4. The cosplay supremacists who think you HAVE TO do textured burn scars for characters like Zuko or Todoroki. As a cosplayer who is into special effects make up too, it's ridiculous that other cosplayers think it's a requirement. Especially, when other cosplayers likely have no experience with special effects or might be allergic to some of the special effects stuff like liquid latex.

5. Cosplayers who use white eyeliner to fill in their waterline or worse, below their real bottom eyelashes to connect the "white" of their eyes to their fake eyelashes. It doesn't look very good online, and it looks worse in person.

6. Cosplayers who call out another series, author, or fandom, when the ones they support are either equally as "toxic" or worse. For example, people who support Killing Stalking (literally contains rape, abuse, murder) trying to call out some other series's fans (let's say) Attack on Titan for the gore or gruesomeness. what even?

7. Ahegao selfies, especially if it's almost other Instagram post. //cough//san_draw is one of them//cough// This is more of a minor pet peeve though.

8. People that only cosplay for fame or recognition, when they should really only be doing this for fun, because then, what is the point if you don't even like it. It's just a waste of time, resources, energy and money otherwise.

9. People or cosplayers that say only a person with a specific body type or skin color can cosplay another character with a specific body type or skin color. For example, when people say that someone is "too fat to cosplay [insert character here]". I think that people with tan or darker complexions get a lot of hate for their too, I've seen comments that go something like "why are you cosplaying [character] if you're [complexion or race]".

edit: 10. Popular cosplayers who think they can get away with cosplaying an artist's original design without even asking them, and even worse, not knowing who the artist is and resorting to asking their followers who the artist is after posting the cosplay. Especially if the cosplayer is the type that wants credit for all of their pictures/cosplays, but won't even give credit to the artist or at the very least try to do a basic reverse image search on Google.

couldn't agree more.  I like when cosplayers use patreon to really focus on shoots and how tos rather than lewds.  It's sad how all these cosplayers feel like they need to show skin to be successful.... Alyson is incredible at what she does, true queen of cosplay imho

Sadly that's what attracts more people :( Many people would rather support someone who offers lewds and bikini/underwear "cosplays" than someone who makes actual tutorials for cosplays

When people treat the cosplay community as a second high school, you know what I mean.

this is mostly cosplay conveniention issues:

I hate being randomly hugged by people cosplaying the series I'm cosplaying from. Haaaate it.

I hate when I used to cosplay male characters other characters who cosplay males (fujoshi) think that's an invite to say suggestive things to me or put their hands on me.

And

holy

fuck

Deadpool cosplayers at cons are the biggest assholes.

I get it's in character to be obnoxious, but they have consistently took it too far every damn time. It gets old super fast.

I'm bringing this topic back to life because I found something that annoys me a lot and has become a trend with all the editing apps that just draw the makeup etc onto your faces: The trend that cosplayers start to not leave the house and go to cons anymore, but stay at home and DRAW the whole costume (wig, makeup, clothes) onto their body. While at first I acknowledged the artistic touch to it and thought they would seperate this trend from actual cosplays, I figured it has become a thing on IG now. And that most of these girls just casually state it or don't state it at all (or only in a few captions) and still call themselves cosplayers and use tags like #cosplayer etc.

I want to show an example if you don't know the trend i'm talking about:

sources: chinyuuaki @ ig, kaezuki @ ig

As said: they usually state they just paint everything or most of it on. But it still worries me the cosplay tags are filled with this and beside using a program like paint, there is not much efford behind this beside that this trend affords a wig (the blue wig is painted on even). I'm feeling bad about seeing this and can see the direction cosplay will move to into a few years. While this is 'just for fun' as cosplay is SUPPOSED to be, so it's not harming anyone, i am afraid that cosplay will be just about pasting things and editing photos instead of actual sewing and costumes.

In my opinion these kind of trends should be seperated from actual cosplays.

Okay,I was just looking through the topics on this page and then found this thread and wanted to comment on it since the topic is really interesting, but then I found a picture of me lol (I'm surprised, was kinda expecting it but I'm not famous so I still didn't expect to show up on this page haah). I'm the person on the first pic btw. So yea,I wanted to say some things about it and I need to apologise for my bad english and if I'm using anything from the features here wrong because I just made this account like 5 minutes ago.

The trend that cosplayers start to not leave the house and go to cons anymore, but stay at home and DRAW the whole costume (wig, makeup, clothes) onto their body.

I know this isn't about me but since my picture is on here. I DO go to cons! I actually just was at a con 2 days ago! I also once went as Kiibo (the cosplay from the photo) even tho his whole robot outfit was just edited. There's also a picture on my Instagram from that day with my Ouma and Kirumi. And I also rearly draw on makeup. I just make my eyeliner darker since my phone's camera isn't that good and colours look kinda different from reallife. And I've never DRAWN On a whole wig. I know some people who do (for example  ig/ dercosplayer) but Imo changing wig colours isn't that big of a deal since most people don't have that much money to buy a lot of wigs. If I want to wear a character to cons, then of course I'm gonna buy the whole cosplay. But changing things with photoshop is actually really practical if you wanna see how you look as a character before you buy the outfit. It's just costesting.

While at first I acknowledged the artistic touch to it and thought they would seperate this trend from actual cosplays, I figured it has become a thing on IG now.

I also  state myself as photoshopper/editor. I've explained this in my storyhighlights and on tellonym. Cosplay is a form of art,and so is photoshopping. I've always liked to edit things with picsart and I was really happy that I finally found a hobby I could combine it with! (and I'm pretty sure the same things go for ig/dekuzuki and ig/kotarqq, the cosplayers in the other picture). It takes a long time to edit a whole new cosplay but everytime when I'm happy with the results,I feel proud and motivated. So if I like it,why shouldn't I do it?=)

And to be fair: not ALL of my cosplays are edited. I also have full cosplays like Nagito,Chiaki,Kaede,Maki and Rantaro. (also more but I'm not posting them because I'm currently focused on danganronpa).

It has become a thing on IG,you think so? Aside from the cosplayers I already said + myself I don't really know anyone who does that kind of heavy editing :D

And that most of these girls just casually state it or don't state it at all (or only in a few captions) and still call themselves cosplayers and use tags like #cosplayer etc.

Oh,and btw. I'm not mad or anything but I think it's better to say "people" instead of girls here since you never know what pronouns people feel most comfortable with! I myself am going by they/them pronouns!^^It's female in german since we don't have any gender neutral pronouns)

And I do state it in every caption of every edited cosplay! :) I also add hashtags like #photoshop ,#editing or #picsart ^^ I mean,it's still cosplay so I don't see why we shouldn't use the hashtag? especially if we also own full outfits,so we're definitely cosplayers xD

And again,I don't think that too many cosplayers are doing this kind of editing so imo it's fine^^

It's still a lot of effort tho,my Kiibo cosplay for example took like 3 hours to edit when I did it the first time and had no idea how to make the outfit. And also the makeup needs time to get done and wigstyling too.

Some people put their effort in sewing their outfits, some put most effort into their maekup and others do it with editing. But still,we all are cosplayers. And not everyone can sew or has the money too buy cosplays and stuff for sewing.

But I do get your point and I'm REALLY SORRY if anything came off as rude! I know you didn't mean any harm with your post but I just wanted to reply to make some things clear about my edits!:)

I'd rather buy the outfits but I don't have that much money for cosplay so I prefer editing it for more accuracy instead of just wearing normal (*insert tsumugis favorite word*) plain clothes^^

And for the topic:

Things that annoy me in the cosplaycommunity:

.-People who only cosplay characters because they are popular and haven't even seen the show or don't like the character.

Cosplaying should be about having fun while being dressed up as your favourite Character. It's just sad to see people only doing it to get more likes because the character is hyped. ( I know people who do this, like cosplaying Rem or Himiko Toga just because they are popular waifus¬¬)

-sexualising characters even tho it has nothing to do with the anime

Why do so many people use their Body to gain followers? It's just..ugH nO. Same thing with only posting sexy/ahegao pictures.

-people who don't even have many followers but are constantly begging their followers to donate to their kofi

I get it when people have over thousands of followers and take cosplaying really serious and actually post quality content. But someone who has under 1k,only wears a wig and normal clothes and takes selfies with a bad phone camera shouldn't beg for donations imo

But well,If we don't like something about someone's acting we all still have the choice to unfollow^^

I just hope that this hate and toxicity will tone down pretty soon.

I feel so sorry for all the cosplayers that are getting hate. :/

We're all in the same community and should spread positivity instead of dragging others down. =)
