Obsession with being cute

Hi y'all. This is a thread to discuss Japan's obsession with kawaii culture, as well as how it is hitting the west so far, and how weeaboos and asian fetishisers don't realise they are basing their whole image around trying to be cute. I'm not one to sound so distanced from it, though, I was never a "weaboo" per se but people used to say I look kinda Japanese so I got obsessed with Japanese girls and I would do the cutesy poses in pictures. I never pretended to be Japanese and I didn't "act" asian, but I was still pretty weebish. I don't know, part of me still thinks Asian girls are unbelievable cute, and they can't help it. They're built more petite, they have younger and rounder looking faces, a lot of them have like this shy or puppy look to them. It's pretty rare in white girls but not unheard of. I can understand why they like being cute over being sexy, they still are sexy in a sort of hidden kind of way, but the cuteness thing appeals to everyone, sexual or romantic or not. I know when I see a cute girl in real life or when my significant other does something cute or talks really quietly, my heart wants to squeee. It's a biological reaction to want to protect cute things.

But sometimes I feel like it can be taken too far. These people don't have a proper grasp of what makes the polished baby-faced Asians they look up to so dang cute, they over do it or don't work with their features or follow trends from 2008 and think the only thing it takes to be kawaii is janky heavy black eyeliner and cheap blush and hime bangs. Oh, and duckface and peace signs and random plushie and anime objects!! Don't get me wrong, I think so many parts of Asian/Japanese culture or at least what tv portrays of it, can be kind of overdone or cringey, but that's what makes it funny! It's natural for them to think wacky plot devices and nonsensical slapstick and random references and crazy jokes are what people want to see, it's what sells for them there. But then you see some random 15 year old chubby girl who doesn't quite get why Japan and anime has those crazy and random things in them, will just yell out NYAAAAH SENPAI in the middle of the food court and it's just....no. I mean when it gets to grown women trying to act like children or using the fake high pitched voice or throwing random basic japanese language into their everyday speech. Or the worst, the frosty white aegyo sal and overdrawn eyeliner and stupid heavy shiney black fake lashes, and making their already small ass white people wound lips even smaller. Yes, they admire small mouths in asia, but with pouty lips, not nonexistent lips. I think some white and westerner girls can pull it off, when they aren't outright saying or acting like they are asian, or being a whiney obnoxious weeb or trying to show off how "anime" they are in real life context, or doing the stupid cutesy poses or thinking they're the gatekeeper of acting kawaii or like they are the most cute person ever. Or bragging about how smol and asian they are or how random asians tell them they look Asian lol.

And, just so it doesn't seem like I'm being racist, here are some pics of some cringey Asians displaying some of the same characteristics or with bad makeup

And I know it's whatever, they're just "having fun" and I'm just salty because weaboo fashion is so in trend now when I feel like, along with punk or being a nerd, should be left to outcasts and people who are legitimately just into those interests and have an interest in Japan and aren't just doing it to appear cutesy. But Ahegao has become a trend and it makes me really mad, and it looks stupid anytime any girl does it. It doesn't look hot or cute but dumb neckbeards and dudebro's who think Anime girls are hot will be like 'oH YEAH BABY MUH REAL LIFE ANIME WAIFU' and...yeah it just looks ugly lol.

As far as the West is concerned, Japan's Kawaii Culture is an 'exotic' thing. Mainstream western beauty is generally not affected by it, and it's more of a subculture thing. I'm going to say that even if there are more people into the whole weeb stuff, it's still it's own niche and most people don't really know about it.

As for weeb culture and kawaii culture, they're not the same thing. Weeb culture has influences from kawaii, but I think it's more about the anime/manga/games. While certain characters might be shown wearing kawaii fashion, it's not really an accurate representation... so it's not so much about the weebs not realising that their images are based on being cute. They're working from a caricature. All manifestations of it will appear way OTT. Oh, I'm pretty sure that pic of Michelle Phan's Gothic Lolita was a Halloween look. And no one does ahegao to look attractive or cute... it's "edgy".

Edit: Kawaii also has some influences from the anime/manga as some styles are influenced by magical girls, etc... but I think what you're talking about is more about weebs.

What's Ahegao and why does it look so awful? Do people really think that's "cute"?

ok so the girl has to do with some 18+ kind of stuff its basically guys that get turned on by girls who make weird orgasm faces like in hentai. Its called ahegao(hentai) or agehao real life,Its impossible to find her identity but its all related to ahegao, but i wouldnt suggest looking for her since the content is  pornographic.

Oh yes I know, I was just using her as an example because I couldn't find a better example of what I meant. Like basically eye enlarging makeup is ok, I think white waterline eyeliner is ok but when girls do it really obviously or draw the white waterline under their lower lashline, and use thick opaque 2 inch black liner around their eyes and shimmery eyeshadow and make their lips small and take the upward angle selfie. I would have thought it was going out of trend but if you look at the "kawaii" or "ulzzang" tags on instagram, there are so many 15 year olds trying so hard to live out their kawaii living doll days. it makes me mad for some reason lol

Except this is Yakuwa Satomi, she used to model for Ageha in her ギャル  days. Idk why but calling her a cringey Asian with bad makeup irks me considering that she's one of the pioneers of the style

Also, I'm pretty sure the girl with the bright pink hair and round glasses is (was? I'm not really buying magazines anymore) a model for KERA or something like that.
