i was miffed at first, then realized it's because you called me out and are absolutely right about this part. i totally get what you mean, looking back on my post about the whole ilvermorny thing, it's really stupid to say what she did was disrespectful to rowling. mostly because fuck jk rowling, and art is supposed to inspire creativity in people and it should be allowed to be built upon or interoperated however you want (sorry to get fake deep like kenna there for a second lol). it's just kind of odd seeing someone who claims to love the source material of something so much, yet know so little about it and want to change things about it. but at the end of the day you're right, it's not hurting anyone nor is it particularly important. however, i still find it fucked up that kenna and her white friend straight up said they were "displeased" with houses based entirely on native american culture, then blatantly removed all of said mythology in their versions. i find that to be a bit more egregious and interesting than a poorly made playbuzz quiz, but idk. maybe i'm just reaching!
i know i already touched on this briefly in a previous post, and i hate to sound like a broken record here.. but kenna and her dimwitted friend being “displeased” with the ilvermorny houses which, as i said before, are HEAVILY based on native american folklore just really rubs me the wrong way. especially when it’s to the point that she doesn’t just feel the need to add or make a few changes to the houses, no. she decided to completely throw them out and create her own generic, white girl, knock-off versions of the hogwarts houses. devoid of any of the original culture and legends that made them unique and interesting in the first place. like, this might be a little bit of a reach here, but i can’t be the only one bothered by this, right?
i know it might be a bit foolish to call her out on this, like i also previously stated, jk rowling got some backlash for her use of native american culture when creating ilvermorny.. but i honestly thought that it not only made a lot of sense, considering the location and time-period when the school was founded. but it was also really great so see a mythology that never gets any recognition or representation in mainstream media. it’s the the only interesting thing about the whole damn school tbh, and kenna ripped all of that out.
like, if you’re gonna blatantly throw out all the native american mythos, you could at least try and keep your selections relative to north america? maybe use flora and fauna known for being native to the region or something? like damn, there’s so much you can work with and this is what we get. it’s honestly impressive how offensive and off the mark this, even for kenna.
long time lurker here! finally decided to take the plunge and post after watching that god awful ilvermorny video. not sure why this is what finally made me crack.. but as a HUGE harry potter fan, i couldn't make it 30 seconds into the video (not including her boring/pointless intro) without having to vent about this SOMEWHERE. i’m sorry in advance for being so long-winded, i’ll go ahead and put this as a spoiler so it doesn’t take up a giant portion of the thread:
