Just noticed that in her joanfood instagram picture with her mother she spelled mom as "mum". LOL Joan, you're American. It's spelled with an "O" in American English. Is this her trying to be more like Jennie because she grew up in New Zealand and people who are from the Commonwealth of Nations spell it with a "U"? Next thing you know she'll be like "I like the colour of the loo in this theatre! So aesthetic!" Or is this influenced by the fact that she had a study abroad program in England during college, you know, the time her family was so bankrupt and still able to afford sending her there.
Joan & Co. fizzled out because she and most of her friends are not that articulated nor have their own opinions about the stuff that matters. They all strike me as very shallow people that only care about aesthetics. They have no opinion about politics, the environment, societal issues, science, technology, etc. All those stuff is still quite relevant to her content of make up and fashion as they contribute to the state of our environment and the social norms of always looking trendy, fitting in and the high standards of beauty in a place like Korea which is notorious for its tendency to focus on physical appearances. Also, her being somewhat a public figure that has received criticism, she can talk about the hardships of having online criticism that plagues many of Korea's celebs these days. That video might turn into a giant pity party for her though and she'll likely focus more on getting sympathy rather than talking about ways to cope with it in a country that still has that topic as a taboo.
She'll only get it for "aesthetic". Her mom would be the one to actually take care of the dog (feeding, grooming, walking, vet appointments, etc.) . She's sooooooo busy. Us normal folk who work 40+ hours a week in an office and get maybe two weeks of the year off can't even begin to understand.
She said she's had her black Fjallraven Kanken since college as well as a Rebecca Minkoff one, both given by her mom. While they are not crazy designer expensive, they are still $100++. When I was a college student, my backpack was from Jansport and I think it costs $50.00 and that bag was all I ever used for 4 years of college plus a couple more years after graduation. All my other bags were canvas tote bag for $10 and a crossbody one from H&M. I grew up in a middle class household with just enough. Not poor but not wealthy either. I never would have spent $100++ on a bag as I have the normal cost of living to pay for while at college. She also studied abroad in UK, right? Was it Oxford or Cambridge? Those 2 universities are mega posh! More fancy than any American Ivy League university. She even went on a trip around Europe that time. Her brother Abe had his toy collection even then and he has also mentioned a collection of sneakers from Nike or whatever in his teen years. Her family might have experienced some money loss but they were nowhere near as poor as she tries to project. All college kids had 1 or 2 jobs unless they're from a wealthy background. In short, why does she try to play off as a victim of poverty? They weren't rich but they weren't that poor. I'm sure that Joan did contribute to her family's finances but it seems like her parents (her dad?) also did their part to provide for the family.
"I'm able to buy things without feeling jealous of people all the time." That just screams materialism and insecurity. Confirms the fact that when she was younger, she always wanted to be part of the rich cool kids club. That is the image she tries to project these days. She buys clothing and accessories that don't suit her but who cares? They're expensive. It's my turn now to make other people feel jealous of me! I think all of us at one point or another wanted to be cool and rich too like the popular kids in school but at some point, we realize that that shit doesn't matter. Like sure, she can afford to buy expensive stuff but she should buy those because she likes them and wants to treat herself. Buy stuff for herself. Not buy them because they're expensive, the cool girls of Blackpink wear them, and to just basically show off. This is why she follows every trend, she always likes to look cool and up to date. I get that she's an influencer and that's her job but still, many other influencers also follow trends but they don't look like fashion victims as they do it. I remember years ago I watched Simon and Martina's video about trends and they said that trends change fast in Korea and once some style becomes a hit, everyone, I mean EVERYONE, would follow it. If one tries to have some individuality, it would require some real guts to stand out. I used to really like Joan, but somewhere along season 2 of Joanday, she started to act very entitled, braggy and lazy.
She's not even smart with her spending for luxury goods. All she has are basically trendy pieces that will be out of style in a few years. Just look at the Gucci bags she has bought in 2017-2018, she never wears them again and will likely not have good resale value if she decides to sell them because they are trendy and don't hold their value compared to more classic styles that she could keep and look good in even as an older lady or would be a great financial investment in the future if she decides to sell them. The same goes with all her hypebae clothing that looks tragic on her now but imagine her being older and still wearing expensive hypebae brands.
I stand corrected. I remembered incorrectly that she went to UC Berkeley rather than USC. Whether or not she did get any financial aid and not a free ride aka scholarship, that means that she had to pay them back as it is basically a loan. If university education costs a standard $50,000 per year, that means a normal college grad owes $200,000 to whoever gave them financial aid. That's a huge chunk of money that the average person will most likely pay off during their 20's. I know Joan has made a lot of money off Youtube and perhaps she has earned $200,000 already and has paid off her student loan but at the same time, she spent so much money on frivolous stuff as well as the astronomical housing costs in Seoul during that time. I think a person who has experienced poverty can take either of these two paths once they earn money. 1 Be very careful with their spending 2. Spend it all to show off. There's nothing wrong with Joan enjoying her money because she still earned it in a legal way. I think what irks all of us here is how she tries to play up how "poor" she once was and how much of a hard worker she is. She worked hard when she started her channel but got complacent and honestly, just entitled like most Youtubers who let fame and money get into their heads..
I honestly don't believe that they were THAT poor. I just think they had to tighten the purse strings for a bit but nowhere near how poor she tried to project them to be. She was still in USC, a fancy expensive school and I don't think she had a scholarship especially since her major was film? No offense, but that is the kind of major rich kids go for along with art history or fashion. Most of them never do anything with their majors and Joan here went to a fancy university for film only to churn out not creative, unoriginal, repetitive and poorly shot Youtube videos. I don't know how scholarships work in America but in my country, they would likely give scholarships to someone with a science or law major as those kids deserve to pursue their dream and they have the brains so the scholarship doesn't turn out to be a waste of money.
I see a bunch of other Beauty Youtubers (medium sized following at around 300,000-500,000 subscribers) who have full time jobs, just does YT as a side hustle and yet they produce better quality videos without assistants. Joan goes to the nail/hair salon, shopping at the same old stores, cafes with the same boring people and needs an assistant? I'm gonna give her the benefit of doubt that she does something for a future product/merch or whatever else besides doing videos but still, as I mentioned in my first sentence, plenty of people with full time regular jobs (one I follow is a lawyer, student, and even a nurse) still manage to make good content. Also, why does she insist on making such dark videos? She's a BEAUTY channel, she should highlight her makeup and skin in every video that isn't a vlog.
