It was Joan. Abe had just announced on social media that he got into a to a school to get his doctorate (PhD) of physical therapy, and Joan congratulated him for getting into medical school (MD, DO). Impressive, but not the same. When she got called out, she said she was just confused. Homegirl was either lying, or Abe kept her in the dark about what his program was, or she really didn't know the difference which is beyond stupid because she went to UC Berkeley and likely had friends who either wanted to be actual doctors or get doctorate degrees. Like there's no way she can't know the difference based on her level of education and the type of school she attended.
Joan & Co is a bad idea because she doesn't like being told that she's wrong and is defensive. Putting your opinions out there requires thick skin and hopefully an open mind (most of these YouTubers seemingly have neither). When she was prattling on and on about sustainable clothing, people were telling her that the best way to be sustainable is to STOP BUYING SO MUCH STUFF. Instead, she cried on camera on the next video (about the bankruptcy) to justify her new money spending. Abe even went into the line of fire to defend her. Idk why she thought sharing more of her opinions was going to be a good idea.
There are a lot of things to unpack here but there are plenty of grannies in Southern California driving in Mercedes-Benz SUVs and paying for the extra charge plastic/brown bag at grocery stores because they didn't bring a bag. I live in a no-bus, no-train high cost of living area so people of all ages have to drive. The people I see with reusable straws and drive electric cars are millennials, not old grannies. The issue isn't just generational. It's how you respect the planet and how deeply ingrained consumerism is in you. My grandma can walk to the store near her house but I'm telling you she'd prefer to get driven around or drive if she could (never learned, born in Asia). The planet is way past the point of caring who is at fault. Honestly the first generation to figure out how to fix it wins in my book.
You'd be disappointed to know that even outside of university, plenty of people are like this. A lot of people don't recognize own privilege or their own luck. People are too afraid to give credit to their upbringing because they feel like it diminishes their work. Just because Mommy and Daddy weren't millionaires, doesn't mean you weren't privileged.
People have mixed up introverts, people with (crippling) social anxiety, socially stunted people and just rude standoffish people. I see it on the internet. InTrOvErTs aRe sOoooO exhAusting to deal with blah blah blah. No, you dealt with someone who can't manage themselves and their behavior in a social setting. Most introverts that I know (and like myself) don't have problems being courteous and showing a personable side at appropriate times. We just carve more alone time than others and find being "on" a lot more tiring. My boss is an introvert and she is exceedingly nice and accommodating -- but as a whole isn't into company gatherings or really large groups. Doesn't make her a jerk or exhausting to be with! You'll find friends! I have a small circle and we mind our own business and but hang out when we want to socialize. No one "tumblrizes" themselves and whines about just wanting to watch Netflix. We keep up with each other with daily short messages or sending each other random memes or news articles in the chat. I feel empathic about this because I hate being mixed up with just plain RUDE people. You'll be okay!!
I've been watching Ondo lately and Joan's latest video auto-played and my hands were full... So here's some AdSense money Joan - I can't block ads on my TV. Ahhhh. I firmly believe that the problem isn't expensive vs cheap skincare. It's mostly there's something (or lot) in her routine that her skin disagrees with... especially if she still needs extractions after regularly exfoliating and slapping on Drunk Elephant acids and vitamin c. She doesn't read all the ingredients and I mean you have to read all of it and figure out what doesn't work. Yes, I'm sorry that 'ascorbyl tetraisopalmitate' probably sounds like torture but if you have specific and enduring skin issues, you need to read! It doesn't matter if it's $10 or $100. Who the f cares if it's LaMer if it breaks you out! Also... extractions. Joan's probably scar prone and that's not her fault but people shouldn't recommend extractions if you're prone to scarring! It's my first time watching in a while and I can't believe that she still gets extractions. Save your skin and money, lady!
Oh yeah I haven't watched in a long time but I believe you guys. I think the point is that some people are honestly just going to be bad at all the languages they speak. Honestly, Christine is so much worse than Joan when she speaks English. No idea how her Korean is as I don't speak Korean. Ashley is way better than both of them, and she's the one who went to America at a later age (9? 10?). Idk I speak both of my languages fluently and can code-switch seamlessly but I feel like that's a gift I've always taken for granted (I'm thankful now!). So I didn't really think about what it would be like to just not be at good at either. Of course effort is also everything. Especially since she wanted to do broadcasting or newscasting. Anyway doesn't change Joan's low efforts though.
This isn't related to the current discussion of Joan and the wedding, but about her speech/language issues. There's a thread on r/Korea today (I landed there for totally different reasons and just clicked on the latest posts after) discussing other people's speech and language skills deteriorated while living in Korea, despite having native fluency in English (or a diff language). I've never been that bothered by Joan's English (I lol'd at her to happy Birthday Christine though haha) but I dunno if I believe that she's just simply lazy. I mean yes she could be but I understand all those people who are probably in the same boat: deteriorating native fluency and ending up translating phrases from Korean to their other languages and sounding awkward. I feel like I'm defending Joan lmao. Just thought it was interesting!
Expecting things out of big corporations and billion-dollar industries will always be difficult but I'm a big vote-with-your-money kind of person. Don't buy it, don't encourage people to buy it, and maybe the corporation will feel it. I'll always put effort because I've always believed in small increments and leading by example. So please continue whatever efforts you make! Anything counts, even just recycling food containers at home. But I legit get frustrated because even at the normal, grassroots level--like YouTube--some idiot influencer will think it's cute to buy reusable straws and IN THE SAME BREATH, tell you that they did a $700 Sephora haul, bought their 500th pair of leggings but SAVE THE TURTLES OK Complete lack of fuckin self-awareness, lmao.
No amount of reusable cups, reusable straws, yoga pants made from recycled bottles, overpriced jeans from Reformation, or whining about the environment changes the fact that most of the problems are from overconsumption. People wanna feel sorry for animals and the planet but are also at Target buying more garbage. You're not really sorry.
She probably met the minimum or exceeded the minimum academic requirements (GPA, SAT score) and/or wrote a personal statement that really appealed to the admissions team. Idk what kind of extra curriculars she had to make her stand out, but if she had those, then that improved her chances too. I will say though, despite the competitive nature of the top tier UC schools, you WILL encounter someone who you think isn't the usual candidate for admissions. Not because you're being an arrogant prick, but I've seriously proofread papers of people who don't know when to capitalize certain words or write a proper paper. Source: I went to a top tier UC school but not Berkeley. Also there's a whole bunch of stuff like admissions does know what kind of high school you went to and how rigorous your coursework is compared to your peers. In conclusion: if you are thinking of it and are on the borderline of what might be accepted, just try because you never know. Seriously. People with lower GPAs have gotten and will continue to get in. Some days the people who read your application will just be in a really good mood lol
She DOES know this about herself and is proud of it, hence saying she "changes for no one" right after Ivan tells her that he likes how she doesn't care. Skin care street wear sustainable fashion Blink queen wears that sassy attitude as a badge of honor. I know someone will report back to her and she'll dismiss it as people not knowing her personally. Ashley and them seem to like her enough so there must be something endearing lol
I actually don't think she's socially awkward. If you watch the video, Ivan actually praises her for being extremely sociable and can talk to people any time, anywhere and in any situation (admirable, IMO) I actually think she might come off strong or abrasive, which is why people might be offended or taken aback by it. It's not about "ditching people" if they're socially awkward. That's way different than having a friend you have to warn people about before introducing them. I'm not coming for socially awkward people (I am too, hello where's the club meeting) and I think it's clearer if you watch the video. You can totally see her attitude about it ("I don't change for anyone, I don't care").
I wonder how it's really like to meet Joan for the first time? I watched that Q & A with Ivan and he said that he tells his friends to give her 10 minutes to warm up and please don't judge right away. I'm trying to think of people in my life that I would make this kind of argument for and I can't think of any. Maybe I'm just lacking in variety of friends?
What? Coco was friends with Ashley and Tina first, and Joan was the new girl at first. All of Joan's idol connections are born out of Coco, Eddy and Ashley. Jae, Bernard and Alex were Coco's friends from church/foreign idol connection. Joan was brought in by Eddy. I stopped watching Coco vlogs when it was just humble bragging all over the place but I'm pretty sure Tina and Coco were actually friends for a long time, post-Blady. The most awkward vlog was when they were clearly not friends anymore but went to pick up Alex from military break and had to pretend to like each other. Joan had a few vlogs here and there before Ashley appeared when she and Tina started hanging out more. And they would invite Coco but it would never happen. There's been a few vlogs where Joan would say that she's about to meet Tina and "maybe Coco" and Coco never shows up, and one of them would chime in that she's too busy/lives far. Something happened there but in no way Joan met all these foreign idols herself without Eddy/Coco.
