OT(?) just in regards to the Mediterranean = POC thing- I think it depends a LOT on what area of those countries you’re from how you’re perceived? I’m mixed Sicilian and we get a lot more comments regarding being ‘foreign’ than say a Northern Italian would - there’s a lot more mixing with middle Eastern in Sicilians but they’re also considered Italian- same with regions in Greece and Turkey etc - so it’s really really dependent on whereabouts her family’s from and how they perceive themselves, too! Eg- I would not call myself a POC but I had a comment in a job interview the other day that suggested they thought otherwise, haha!
OoOooOOoo okay I don't want to come across as rant-y but this is as much for Kenna as it is for here (in case she reads it) please, please don't pick up craft as a part of your aesthetic. I would never actively turn anyone away from it, especially if it might help Kenna or others but I would STRONGLY DISCOURAGE anyone from picking it up as a part-time interest to pass the time- for many witches (speaking with obvious bias here) it is something that is passed down from mother to daughter and is as strongly held as a part of one's identity as one's sexuality or ethnicity (which is not to say that those who practice without a hereditary link- I would argue their commitment to it without any familial prompting is admirable!!) For a lot of people it is as literal as that quote that sometimes makes the circuits online- 'we are the daughters of the witches you could not burn.' It's something that- much like religion -can entirely alter your perception of the world and is not to be taken lightly. Again, if practicing is something that Kenna genuinely WHOLEHEARTEDLY desires to pursue then I would applaud her but she best be warned that it will not serve her well to take it lightly. (Sorry if this comes across super biased- I would love to see Kenna fall in love with the practice but given her history it's a little difficult to see her taking it seriously? then again, is it wrong of me to make judgements before?)
Sorry, not to be THAT person but Kenna did talk about having chronic ovarian cysts a long while back (in a facts about me vid I think?) I remember it because when I first saw it back when Kenna's videos were much better I was happy to see someone with seemingly a similar condition to me (PCOS) - another symptom of PCOS is weight gain/difficulty with weightloss- to be honest I think Kenna's shape now is better than before but it might be food for thought and if she does indeed have PCOS it can really f with you mentally too. On a side note- I do really miss those videos to be honest- Kenna's lucky to have quite a calming voice and a couple of her videos back then are still some of my favourites - 'ways to save the planet' and her vegetarian video par example- she managed to spread a really good message without being an arse about it. I hate to be one of those people telling someone not to grow/change but I do miss the 'substance'(?) aspect of her videos from back then.
I'm very sorry to hear that! I'm sorry if anything I said was upsetting! I'm sure that it will be better from here and I hope that you're in safer place now. I agree wholeheartedly - girl really needs to let things go, haha. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taonH6FoOTA On another note, I'm sorry I can't find who it was that asked (on lunch break!) but concerning what tradition of Buddhism Kenna follows, in this video she refers to herself as a Theravada Buddhist. (immediately preceding this she talks about how she dreams of meeting her future love in a cute way so as to be able to have a good meet cute story. am I missing something here? I had thought Kenna was aroace? Sorry if I'm mistaken!) @Lynn In 'clarifying' things you're extending the discussion? :'D that aside- I agree with you it's kinda OT opinion stuff at this point and I wouldn't want to upset other users to which this kind of thing might pertain to also!
I agree that she was nasty and said it entirely wrong - which is why I said in my previous post I 'sort of' agreed- in that the execution was wrong but I agree with her sentiment. Sorry, but I have to disagree with you. If a friend asks me for advice I will give it to them in consideration of their feelings- ie, if they are having a rough patch with a relationship, and I dislike their partner, I won't tell them 'I hate so and so, dump them,' because I know that they love them. Instead I would try to provide actually helpful advice for the situation, ie what is it that you argue about- find a way to compromise etc. Me shoving my ideas at them won't help the situation at all, but giving a different viewpoint in consideration of theirs might. I don't think it's entirely appropriate to make assumptions that because at one point she was (or portrayed herself to be) spiritual that THAT must be the ultimate answer to all her following problems. Especially given a lot of the comments WERE from a Christian viewpoint which is in itself a 'evangelic' or conversion focused religion. With my experience and knowledge of RC I wouldn't assume a Buddhist practitioner's spiritual alignment because they're not? the same? Again, I don't think she did it the right way at all, but I do understand her sentiments.
(Just for context- I'm coming at this being Italian and having been raised VERY involved in Roman Catholicism.) I know this might irk some people and I'm really sorry but- I (sortof) agree with Kenna on this one? She definitely could have gone about it in a more respectful way but to non-Christians - not just atheists- the evangelistic and 'conversion' aspect of Christianity can honestly be pretty terrible. That is to say, when you're struggling with something in life and people around you are assuring you based on THEIR beliefs and not your own it can be really frustrating and isolating- sort of like struggling with a math problem and someone handing you a dictionary. Sure, that might make sense to them- but you don't have a clue how it relates to your problem. Religion is everything for some people, something for others and nothing for a few. I definitely wouldn't have worded it the way she did but she's not generally the best at that- perhaps immaturity? (saying this as someone a year older than her hahaha.)
I think she'll get some height comments- I can't speak for Japan 100% but although the average height in a lot of Asian countries is shorter than the West I really don't notice it in HK. I was surprised that I was way shorter than most people and got a lot of comments along the lines of 'you're so short for a foreigner!' I think I'm around McKenna's height (? sorry k not all of us care all that much bout it) so she'll most likely get the same and probably construe it the way she'd like to hear.
So I’ve only just seen this thread but I’ve been wondering about the banner for a long while - although I understand a lot of artists’ trepidation around PULL I found this site really helpful (particularly in rectifying the unfair opinion I had of Venus Angelic- before PULL I had never known that the drama around her wasn’t really her doing but Margo’s!) I’m a freelance illustrator - I’m commissioned mostly for realistic portraits and concept art - even in my ‘spare time’ I’m mostly painting, haha, so I wouldn’t mind contributing to the banner ?
I don’t think Venus would ever pursue it but there is suing on grounds of defamation/libel? It could be argued that a lot of the things she’s said/done has dissuaded viewers from Venus or led them to be outright aggressive to her, resulting in loss of income. But then that also could have raised her views? Either way I doubt Venus would ever do it (as much as I’d LOVE to see her drag Margo.) Edit: Thankyou for the hooktube link! I didn’t realise such a site existed it’s perfect!
Although she said that she was ‘tested’ for an ED and told she doesn’t have one it sounds EXACTLY like body dysmorphia - I’m afraid I don’t know all that much about how this is perceived in Japan but it definitely comes under EDNOS if not strictly being an ED.
Manaki is wise in the ways of click bait. I did get a giggle out of the vid, tho. (Not hating on those that do click bait - in the current online climate it feels like it’s almost mandatory lmao - especially with adpocalypse etc) do you guys prefer Manaki/Venus’ little sketches or more vlog style stuff ?
Watched the vid while making dinner I’m shocked by how natural they seem with each other (in comparison to old videos I mean) it was lovely to see ! The last minute actually made me laugh it seemed more like the kind of weird shit any couple would do rather than a YouTube thing ? In general they strike me as a happy, comfortable couple !
(Also sorry if OT but does Manaki remind anyone else of Shoma Uno ?! That’s been bothering me for SO LONG finally clicked when watching this video !)
I retreated into lurk mode for so long but my gosh that video (specifically the bit about Venus’ gratitude towards those around her) has me bawling! Like @Sodapop said I have begun to look at Venus like a little sister even though she’s probably a thousand times braver than I am 😂 (Also if anyone I knew spoke about these things I would 100% White Knight her no shame it takes balls to do what Venus has done!) Lookin forward to seeing what Venus does from here (although tbh I wouldn’t be bothered if she takes a while to just relax back into normality - every hospital stay I’ve had left me feeling so drained even if I slept most of the time, aha) 💕
I understand this is going to be a very unpopular opinion, but I'm a big Always Open fan so I braced myself for her guesting on it- so far I'm surprised that I'm not really annoyed? I'm not certain if it's being around Barb and Mariel - both super gorgeous women- or what, but she seems less obnoxious? Then again, not done yet- fingers crossed for the rest of it!
As much as she may be drunk it's still kind of refreshing to hear Venus discussing serious matters openly- I feel as though it gives us as viewers a better understanding of her actual opinions and I'm so happy to see that she has matured and developed opinions of her own. Also, in light of her recent comment (I believe there's a screen of it on this thread or the general thread) about how she has realised that weight and weight loss aren't everything this may also be a small window into her own struggles with associating weight and value as a person.
Also perhaps an unpopular opinion but I LOVED the Lolita video!! As a student who can't afford these type of things it's nice to really see products straight from baby on camera presented in a (non-yumi-esque?) way! And even if she is older and switching up her style who cares! People have far too many requisites just to wear pretty clothes nowadays ffs! I was told when I was younger I couldn't wear Lolita since I have a large chest- if someone likes something, i.e. Cute stuff, who are you to shit on their parade anyway.
